I was appalled to read "Tanning beds hot perk at apartments: Bronzing between classes" (June 11).

These kids just don't get it about the connection of tanning beds to melanoma, a deadly cancer becoming epidemic.

My daughter Jaime was a tanning bed addict as a teen. She wanted a "killer" tan, and she got just that -- we buried her in March, right before her 30th birthday. Her body was scarred from surgeries, bald from chemo treatments and radiation to her brain tumors and skeleton-thin -- definitely not the picture Jaime had in mind when she was frying herself in tanning beds.

There's no effective treatment or cure, so prevention is key.

Meanwhile, apartment owners are making free and unlimited sessions in tanning beds readily available to college students.
